Exploring the Tweetup

July 14, 2008 · 2 Comments

Although it has been a little while since I have last posted, I have continued to be an active Twitterer. One of the things that I continue to see on Twitter that has me intrigued are Tweetups. It seems that most major cities have people that organize them. I am interested in hosting one in my home town of Portland, Oregon but I need some help! If you know answers to any of my questions I’d love your help!

1. What is a Tweetup? Is it as simple as it seems- a way for a community on Twitter to meet in person?

2. What brings people to a Tweetup?

3. What makes a successful Tweetup?

Thank you already for any advice!

[...] July 19, 2008 by Tiffany Derville One of my students last year, Kelsey Thompson, seeks tips from people who have experience with tweet-ups, which are in-person social events with Twitter groups. She would like to plan a tweet-up in Portland. If you have tweet-up experience, fly by her blog and please leave a comment. You can find her blog here. [...]

    Hi Kelsey,

I’m actually working with a few other Twitter addicts in the Chattanooga, Tennessee, area to plan our city’s first Tweetup. Our event is coming up later this month, so I can’t answer your third questions, but I’ll tackle the first two.

In short, yes, it is as easy as it sounds. Pick a date, time and location and then just get the word out (via Twitter, naturally). We’re also promoting ours via Facebook and Chattarati (chattarati.com, a hyperlocal blog) but part of the reason for that is to try and attract more Chattanoogans to Twitter.

I think the draw of a Tweetup is to personally meet the people you only get to interact with via your computer or smartphone. Most of the locals I follow on Twitter are within the cliched “6 degrees” but I’d like to connect the dots and get to know them a bit better.

I hope that helps. Good luck with your Tweetup!

    John
